Women’s Tennis Edged by Grand Canyon, 4-3

EAST LANSING, Mich. (1/20/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy was edged by Grand Canyon University, 4-3, in a neutral site matchup in East Lansing on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Titans came out strong, earning the doubles point with a clean sweep from all three lines. Freshmen twins Jasmine and Chelsea Apawti powered their way to a 6-2 win from No. 1, before Sophie Torcello and Sara Mitrakovic clinched the point with a 7-5 win at No. 3. Juniors Iris Thioux and Pauline Van Herck secured the sweep with a 7-6 win at No. 2.
 
Grand Canyon would flip the script on the Titans in singles, spoiling the win for Detroit Mercy by earning the edge in four of six singles decisions.
 
Torcello and Van Herck picked up the lone Titan wins in singles with three-set victories from No. 3 and 4, respectively.
 
Detroit Mercy continues its busy weekend with a road matchup at Michigan State on Sunday evening. The Spartans and Titans will begin play at 5 p.m. from East Lansing.
