MONROEVILLE, Pa. (2/18/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team picked up a 5-2 win on the road at Saint Francis on Saturday night, extending the squad's win streak to five.
The Titans started the season with two tough losses on the road at Western Michigan and Purdue, but have rattled off five straight wins to get to 5-2 on the season.
The Red Flash struck first with wins at the top two lines of doubles, but the Titans would flip the script and take five of six singles matches to earn the 5-2 win.
Senior
Nathan Ponton earned a 6-1 and 7-6 win at No. 2 singles, while freshman
Luka Soskic won 6-2 and 6-2 at No. 3.
Newcomer
Jenya Sirous overpowered Eduardo Garcia at No. 4 with wins of 6-1 and 6-0.
Freshman
Alvaro Arce picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 and
Gvidas Motuzas closed it out with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6.
At No. 3 doubles, Motuzas and
Adam Zychowicz held a 5-1 lead before the match was called off as Saint Francis clinched the point.
The win streak marks the second time in the last two seasons that the Titans have won five straight. With another win, Detroit Mercy would match the longest win streak in program history – set at six in 1990.
The Titans will look to match that record when they take on Duquesne at 3 p.m. on Sunday from the Steel City.
