PITTSBURGH (2/19/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team was edged 4-3 on the road to Duquesne on Sunday night from the Steel City.
The Dukes quieted a red-hot Titan lineup by taking the doubles point and holding on with three wins in singles – two of which came in extra sets.
The loss snaps Detroit Mercy's five-game win streak as the Titans fall to 5-3 on the season. Meanwhile, Duquesne improved to 4-4 with the win.
Four singles matches went to three sets, with Titan newcomers
Luka Soskic and and
Gvidas Motuzas pulling out victories from the No. 2 and 5 positions, respectively.
Soskic rolled to a 6-3 win in the opening set at No. 2, before Drew Akins recorded a 6-2 win in the second to level the match. Soskic would emerge with the win after outlasting Akins in the third, 7-6 (8-4).
Motuzas dropped the opening set 6-4 at No. 5, but bounced back with wins of 7-5 and 6-4 to claim the win.
Newcomer
Jenya Sirous picked up a clean win at No. 3 with scores of 6-4 and 7-6.
Needing one more decision to keep the win streak intact, the Titans watched it slip away as senior
Nathan Ponton fell in three sets at No. 1, freshman
Alvaro Arce did the same from No. 4 and
Adam Zychowicz falling 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Titans will look to rebound and start a new streak this weekend when they head to East Lansing for a doubleheader with Ball State and Michigan State on Saturday (Feb. 24).
