Louisville, Ky. (3/18/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team began the weekend with a 6-1 win over Xavier on Saturday, but settled for a road trip split with a 5-2 loss at Louisville on Sunday.
The Titans toppled the Musketeers on Saturday in convincing fashion, taking doubles and five of six singles decisions to earn the 6-1 win.
Senior
Nathan Ponton rallied from an opening set loss at No. 2 to pick up a three-set win, while freshman
Luka Soskic picked up a win in straight sets at No. 3.
Newcomers
Jenya Sirous and
Gvidas Motuzas picked up wins in straight sets at Nos. 4 and 5 respectively, as did classmate Alavaro Arce with the match-clinching point at No. 6.
A strong Louisville squad was able to fend off the Titans with a 5-2 win on Sunday evening to cap the road trip for Detroit Mercy.
Jenya Siorous and
Artem Vasheshnikov gave the 22nd-ranked doubles pair of the Cardinals all they could handle at No. 1 doubles, before being edged 7-6 (7-5).
Louisville clinched the doubles point and picked up four singles wins for the victory.
Newcomers
Luka Soskic and
Alvaro Arce picked up wins for the Titans, with Soskic earning a tough three-set win at No. 3 and Arce picking up a win in straight sets from No. 6.
The Titans move to 8-7 on the season with the split, while Louisville improved to 11-4.
The two-day road trip was the Titans' last tune-ups before the start of Horizon League play next weekend. Detroit Mercy kicks off conference play next Saturday against IUPUI and Sunday against UIC, with both matches held in the Motor City.
