DETROIT (3/24/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team powered past IUPUI in their Horizon League opener, 6-1, on Saturday night from Franklin Athletic Club.
 
The Titans jumped on the visiting Jaguars early by taking the doubles point, before nearly sweeping singles to claim the 6-1 victory.
 
Jenya Sirous and 
Artem Vasheshnikov got things started with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, before 
Nathan Ponton and 
Luka Soskic clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2. The Titans also held a lead on the third court, but the match went unfinished with 
Alvaro Arce and 
Gvidas Motuzas up, 5-4.
 
In singles, the Titans swept courts 2-6.
 
Arce got on the board first with a 6-3, 6-1 win from No. 6, before Soskic earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3.
 
Sirous won the opening set at No. 4, 6-3, but would have to earn the win in three sets after falling in the second, 4-6, and claiming a 6-2 win in the third.
 
Motuzas got on the board next, earning a 6-3 and 7-6(6) win at No. 5.
 
Ponton picked up the Titans' final point of the day after dispatching Sean Bailey at No. 2 singles, 6-4 and 7-6.
 
Detroit Mercy improves to 9-7 overall and 1-0 in league play. IUPUI meanwhile, falls to 6-10 overall and 0-1 in their Horizon League debut.
 
The home stand continues for Detroit Mercy as the Titans host UIC on Sunday night from Franklin Athletic Club. The match will begin with doubles at 6 p.m. in Southfield, Mich.
