DETROIT (3/25/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team swept UIC in a 7-0 win in Horizon League action from Franklin Athletic Club on Sunday night.
The Titans picked up the doubles point and carried the momentum into singles, where they won all six matches – four of which came in straight sets.
Nathan Ponton and
Luka Soskic picked up a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles and
Alvaro Arce and
Gvidas Motuzas clinched the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
Artem Vasheshnikov outlasted Niko Wasilewicz in a pair of close 7-6 sets at No. 1 singles.
Newcomers Soskic, Motuzas and Arce cruised to wins on their respective courts. Soskic picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3, Motuzas won 6-4 and 6-0 from No. 5 and Arce won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6.
Ponton earned a hard-fought three set win at No. 2, outlasting Johan Hedstrom 7-6, 4-6 and 10-8.
Jenya Sirous secured the sweep for the Titans with a 6-3, 2-6 and 6-2 win from No. 4.
Detroit Mercy improves to 10-7 overall and begins Horizon League play 2-0 after the opening weekend. UIC, meanwhile, falls to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
The Titans will look to continue the momentum next weekend as the squad heads to Wisconsin to take on Marquette (Mar. 30) and Green Bay (Mar. 31).
