MILWAUKEE, Wis. (3/30/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team was upended at Marquette, 7-0, on Friday night from Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The visiting Titans fell behind early as the Golden Eagles from the Big East picked up the doubles point and strung together six singles wins for the victory.
Senior
Nathan Ponton and freshman
Luka Soskic, the Horizon League men's doubles team of the week, picked up their fourth straight victory with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
Despite Marquette sweeping doubles, the Titans did not go down without a fight.
Four of the six singles matches went to extras in the first set, but the Golden Eagles would take all four opening sets – three by a 7-6 score and one by 7-5.
Ponton, Soskic and
Jenya Sirous fell in the opening sets of Nos. 2-4 by a 7-6 margin and
Gvidas Motuzas fell on the wrong side of a 7-5 decision at No. 5.
Marquette would earn the wins in all four, with Sirous falling by a narrow 7-6 margin again in the second set.
Freshman
Alvaro Arce rallied from a 6-1 loss in the opening set to pick up a 7-6 win in the second, before falling in the third set at No. 6.
The loss snaps a two-game win streak for the Titans and drops their record to 10-8 on the season.
Detroit Mercy will look to bounce back as they return to Horizon League play on Saturday at Green Bay. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET in Green Bay, Wis.
