GREEN BAY, Wis. (3/31/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team was edged, 4-3, on the road to Green Bay on Saturday evening in the Badger State.
In a closely contested Horizon League matchup, four of six singles decisions were decided in three sets. Singles were split, 3-3, but the Phoenix earned the doubles point to edge the Titans by a narrow 4-3 margin.
After falling from the third doubles line, senior
Nathan Ponton and freshman
Luka Soskic leveled the score with a 6-3 win from No. 2. Locked in a battle at No. 1,
Jenya Sirous and
Artem Vasheshnikov were toppled, 7-5.
In singles, Soskic rallied from a 4-6 loss in the opening set with wins of 6-3 and 7-5 in the second and third to pick up the victory at No. 3.
Motuzas also rallied from an early deficit, picking up a win in three sets at No. 5 after taking the final two frames, 7-6 and 6-3.
Freshman
Alvaro Arce outlasted Felix Triebe of the Phoenix at No. 6 with scores of 6-3, 6-7 and 6-3.
Vasheshnikov fell on the wrong side of a hard fought battle at No. 1 singles, falling in three sets after dropping a 5-7 score in the first and forcing extras with a 7-6 win in the second.
The loss is the first conference loss of the season for the Titans, who fall to 2-1 in Horizon League play and 10-9 overall. Green Bay, meanwhile, improves to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in league action.
Detroit Mercy returns to Horizon League action next weekend as Cleveland State and Youngstown State visit the Motor City on Saturday (Apr. 7) and Sunday (Apr. 8), respectively.
