MIAMISBURG, Ohio (4/22/18) – Records were made to be broken. With a 7-0 win over Wright State, the Detroit Mercy men's tennis team clinched a Horizon League title and surpassed the program record for wins in a season with 14.
The regular season title is the first for men's tennis in Titan history, while the 14 wins eclipse the previous record of 13 by the 1990 Titans.
The title will be shared as Cleveland State also finished with a 6-1 mark in league play, but the Titans will receive the No. 1 seed in the Horizon League Tournament next weekend after defeating the Vikings in a grueling match earlier this season. Both teams will receive a bye in the first round.
The Titans needed a win to clinch the share and the squad came out firing from the beginning.
Detroit Mercy took the doubles point as
Nathan Ponton and
Luka Soskic delivered at court two with a 6-2 win, followed by
Alvaro Arce and
Gvidas Motuzas with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
The freshman class was on top of their game with all four winning in straight sets from the heart of the order.
Soskic picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3,
Jenya Sirous won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 by Motuzas, and a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win from Arce at No. 6.
The upperclassmen capped the sweep after bouncing back from opening set losses on the top two courts.
Artem Vasheshnikov rallied with wins of 6-4 and 10-8 at No. 1, while Ponton bounced back with wins of 6-1 and 10-5 at No. 2.
The Titans finish the regular season at 14-9 overall and 6-1 in league action. Detroit Mercy will look to add a Horizon League Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament next weekend from West Lafayette, Ind.
The Titans will play the winner of No. 4 Green Bay and No. 5 UIC on Saturday at 3 p.m. from the Schwartz Tennis Center.
