WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (4/28/18) – The Detroit Mercy men's tennis team captured the program's first regular season title earlier this season and with a 4-0 win over No. 4 Green Bay on Saturday, the Titans will have their first crack at a Horizon League Tournament Title.

Standing in the way of the berth into the NCAA Tournament is No. 2 Cleveland State, who tied the Titans conference mark of 6-1 to split the regular season title and also advanced to the championship round, winning 4-0 versus No. 3 Youngstown State on the other side of the bracket.

The Championship will be decided at 2 p.m. on Sunday from Schwartz Tennis Center on the Purdue University campus. The match can be streamed live on ESPN+.

To reach the title round, Detroit Mercy avenged their only conference loss with a win over Green Bay in the semifinals.

Freshmen Gvidas Motuzas and Alvaro Arce drew first blood with a 6-3 win at #3 doubles, but the Phoenix answered with a win at #1. The doubles point would come down to court two, where senior Nathan Ponton and Luka Soskic prevailed in a tough 7-6 decision.

With the early 1-0 lead, the Titans went to work in singles and picked up three straight wins to seal the win.

Junior Artem Vasheshnikov was sharp on the top singles line and picked up a win in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2 over fellow First Team All-HL honoree Florian Kraenzler.

Arce followed with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win at #6 and Ponton closed it out with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #2 over James Ling.

In the three unfinished matches, the Titans led in two and were tied in the third.

Soskic picked up a 7-5 win in the opening set and was trailing 1-2 in the second frame at court three and Motuzas was ahead 6-4, 5-2 at #5 when the match was called.

Detroit Mercy improves to 15-9 with the win, increasing its program best single season win total to 15. The Phoenix, meanwhile, see their season wrap up at 12-10.

The Titans will look for the first HL Tourney title and NCAA Tournament berth in program history tomorrow at 2 p.m. against No. 2 Cleveland State.
