SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (4/8/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over Youngstown State on Sunday night from Franklin Athletic Club.
With the win, the Titans improve to 12-9 overall and 4-1 in Horizon League play. The 12 wins by the Titans eclipses last year's total of 11 and is the most for Detroit Mercy since the 1990 squad posted a program-record 13 win season.
Detroit Mercy earned the victory with a thorough performance from top to bottom. The Titans earned the doubles point and nearly swept singles, piling up five wins.
In doubles, the duo of
Nathan Ponton and
Luka Soskic picked up their seventh straight win with a 6-3 advantage from the second court. The tandem is 12-2 overall when playing together and a perfect 5-0 in conference play.
The freshman team of
Gvidas Motuzas and
Alvaro Arce secured the doubles point for the Titans with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
In singles, junior
Artem Vasheshnikov capped a strong weekend with a win in straight sets at No. 1, 6-2 and 7-6.
Soskic and Arce also won in straight sets, with Soskic taking No. 3 by a 6-3, 7-5 score and Arce earning a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6
Motuzas earned the win in comeback fashion after falling in the first set at No. 5 by a 6-7 margin. The freshman bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second and capped the rally with a 10-7 win in the third.
Freshman
Jenya Sirous earned a tough 7-6 win in the opening set at No. 4, before dropping a 4-6 decision in the second. Sirous would outlast the Penguin counterpart with a 12-10 edge in a grueling final frame.
The Titans stay atop the Horizon League standings with the win at 4-1, while Youngstown State falls to 1-2 in league action.
Two matches remain in the quest to a regular season title for the Titans – road tilts at Northern Kentucky (Apr. 21) and Wright State (Apr. 22). The Norse are currently 0-4 in HL play, while the Raiders sit in fifth at an even 2-2 mark.
