SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (4/8/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback at the hands of Youngstown State on Sunday night from Franklin Athletic Club.
The first-place Penguins, who have won the past four Horizon League championships, jumped out to an early lead over the shorthanded Titans and strung together five singles wins for the victory.
Youngstown State earned the doubles point after a win by default on the third court and a 6-2 win at No. 2. The Apawti sisters led 4-3 at No. 1 when the match was called off.
In singles, junior
Pauline Van Herck highlighted the Titan effort with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3.
Freshman
Jasmine Apawti cruised in the first set at No. 2 singles with a 6-0 win, but fell 3-6 in the second as the match was tied up. Sofia Macias would clinch the win and end Apawti's seven-match win streak with a 7-5 edge in the final frame.
The Penguins improve to 5-0 in Horizon League play and 11-9 overall with the win. The Titans, meanwhile, fall to 7-14 overall and 2-4 in league action.
Detroit Mercy will look to bounce back this weekend as the Titans host Metro Series rival Oakland on Apr. 14. The match will be held at 12 p.m. at the Titan Tennis Courts behind Calihan Hall. In the event of bad weather, the match will move indoors to Franklin Athletic Club and start at 6 p.m.
