TEMPE, Ariz. (7/24/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team earned 2018 All-Academic Team honors, with five Titans named Scholar-Athletes, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Tuesday.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. During the 2017-18 academic year, the Titans excelled in the classroom with a 3.621 team GPA. It is the second straight year the Titans were honored by the ITA and seventh overall team distinction since 2006.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1) be a varsity letter winner, 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
Five Titans received ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction –
Iris Thioux,
Pauline Van Herck,
Chelsea Apawti,
Jasmine Apawti and
Sophie Torcello.
The five Titans honored by the ITA is the most in the Horizon League, while seven other conference opponents also earned All-Academic Team awards.
In all, 735 teams and 4,328 student-athletes across all five divisions of collegiate tennis were honored.
