DETROIT (7/26/18) – From July 26-27, DetroitTitans.com will release the Top 10 Moments of 2017-18 as voted on by members of the Detroit Mercy athletic staff. Each day, a new moment will be posted on DetroitTitans.com as well as on each of the Titan social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter & Instagram).
The Detroit Mercy men's tennis team checks in at No. 2 as the Titans set a school record with 15 wins on the year – besting the 13 they had in 1990 - and earned a share of the HL regular-season title for the first time in school history as they were seeded first in the Horizon League Championship.
The Titans would advance to the championship round after defeating the fourth-seeded Phoenix, 4-0, in the semifinals. Detroit Mercy, looking for its first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament, was edged by the co-regular season champs Cleveland State in a grueling 4-2 decision in the title round.
On the year,
Aaron Paajanen was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year – the first in program history – while
Artem Vasheshnikov was named First Team All-HL for the second straight year and senior
Nathan Ponton was tabbed Second Team All-HL for the second time in his career.
Ponton finished his career with 57 singles wins, second all-time in school history, while being a part of 43 doubles wins, third in the Titan record book. Combined, Ponton's 100 wins are the most in Titan history.
The freshmen class of
Luka Soskic,
Jenya Sirous,
Gvidas Motuzas and
Alvaro Arce was one of the best in the nation tallying a 24-4 mark in Horizon League singles play.
Stay tuned for the rest of our Titan Top 10 Moments of 2017-18 as we unveil the rest of the list this coming week with the No. 1 moment being released on Friday.
