River Forest, Ill. (9/16/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team closed out the River Forest Collegiate Invite with a barrage of wins to wrap up their first action of the 2018-19 season.
The Titans won five matches on the final day of the tournament hosted by Northern Illinois at the Oak Park Tennis Center, highlighted by
Alvaro Arce Lopez-Sanchez's win in the championship round at No. 5 singles and a trio of third place finishes at Nos. 1, 3 and 4.
Lopez-Sanchez reached the championship round at No. 5 with a pair of wins and closed the weekend with a strong 6-3, 7-5 victory over Gabriel Carvajal from Valparaiso.
Sophomore
Luka Soskic clinched third place from No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Oscar Pachon from Saint Louis. Freshman
Dino Bonetta defeated Saint Louis' Kenji Yanaba for 3rd place at No. 3 singles with scores of 7-6 and 6-1, while
Gvidas Motuzas picked up a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win against Kasper Parklo from UIC for 3rd place at No. 4 singles to give Detroit Mercy three bronze places.
Yevhen Sirous added another win for Detroit Mercy as the sophomore cruised past Brandon Shanklin of Marquette, 6-0 and 6-4, to close out the weekend with back-to-back wins and a fifth place effort at No. 2.
Senior
Adam Zychowicz fell in a pair of narrow sets at No. 6 against UIC's Anthony Nguyen, 6-7 (4-7) and 6-7 (5-7).
The Titans finish the weekend with one first-place and three third-place finishes in singles, as well as a first- and third-place showing in doubles.
