Horizon League Release
INDIANAPOLIS (1/15/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team was selected to finish eighth in the 2019 Horizon League Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
UIC was selected to finish first, followed by reigning tournament champion Youngstown State in second, Oakland in third, Cleveland State in fourth and Wright State in fifth.
In 2017-18, the Titans went 7-17 overall and 2-7 in league play as the squad battled through injuries late in the season. Detroit Mercy returns all eight players from last year's roster, providing the Titans with plenty of depth throughout the lineup.
Sophomore
Jasmine Apawti returns as the team's leader in wins from a year ago, compiling a 14-8 record in singles as a true freshman at the second position.
Senior
Iris Thioux also returns after picking up 11 wins from the Titans' top singles line in 2017-18, as does classmate
Pauline Van Herck, junior
Ksenia Providokhina and sophomores
Chelsea Apawti,
Marie Maitrot,
Sara Mitrakovic and
Sophie Torcello.
The Titans' season begins Jan. 26 as Detroit Mercy travels to Illinois State. Detroit Mercy's home opener is set for Feb. 2 against Saint Francis (PA) from Franklin Athletic Club, while the Horizon League opener is slated for Saturday, Mar. 23 at UIC.
