BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (1/26/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team was edged, 4-3, on the road at Illinois State in the Titans' season opener on Saturday.
Jasmine Apawti and
Chelsea Apawti earned a win at the first position of doubles, but the host Redbirds answered with tough 6-4 wins at the second and third positions.
J. Apawti picked up a win at No. 1 singles, as did
Ksenia Providokhina at No. 4 and
Sophie Torcello at No. 5, but Illinois State would take the remaining three matches to split singles and earn the 4-3 win.
Illinois State improves to 2-0 with the hard-fought victory, while Detroit Mercy falls to 0-1 to start the 2019 season.
The Titans will look to bounce back next weekend when they meet Saint Francis at Franklin Athletic Club on Saturday (Feb. 2) at 6 p.m.
