EAST LANSING, Mich. (2/10/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team fell to UConn, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon from the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing.
Jasmine Apawti and
Iris Thioux led the way for the Titans, with wins on the top two lines of singles.
At No. 1 singles, J. Apawti got off to a strong start with a 6-4 win in the opening set over Jacquelyn Fitz-Rando, before finishing the match in straight sets with a 6-2 win in the second.
Thioux fell in the opening set at No. 2 singles, 6-1, but answered with a gritty 7-5 win in the second frame to level the score. Thioux pulled through with a 10-8 win in the third to earn the hard-fought victory.
Detroit Mercy falls to 1-2 on the young season, while UConn improves to 2-4.
The Titans return to action next weekend when the squad travels to the Empire State to take on St. Bonaventure (Sat., Feb. 16) and Niagara (Sun., Feb. 17).
