CHICAGO (3/23/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team dropped its Horizon League opening match at UIC on Saturday afternoon from the Windy City.
The Titans were sharp early as
Iris Thioux and
Sophie Torcello teamed up for a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. UIC answered with a win on the third court, and outlasted
Jasmine Apawti and
Chelsea Apawti 7-5 at No. 1 for the early doubles point.
The Flames would stay hot in singles and seal the match with wins across the board.
Pauline Van Herck nearly pulled off the comeback win at No. 6 singles, bouncing back from a 6-2 defeat in the opening set with a 6-4 win in the second. Arendt would get the edge in the final frame, however, pulling out the 10-5 victory.
The Titans fall to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in Horizon League action. The Flames, meanwhile, improve to 10-4 and 1-0, respectively.
Detroit Mercy will look to bounce back on Sunday as the squad heads to Indianapolis to take on IUPUI.
