SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (3/30/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team was edged 4-3 by Milwaukee on Saturday evening in Horizon League action from Franklin Athletic Club.
The visiting Panthers came out strong and took the doubles point with wins on the first and second lines. Detroit Mercy would mount a comeback, but the rally would fall just short as the Titans took three points in singles and fell by a 4-3 final score.
Ksenia Providokhina picked up the first win for the Titans with a 6-4, 6-2 advantage at No. 4 singles, before
Pauline Van Herck added another with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6.
The final two points came down to a pair of matches in extra sets.
Sophie Torcello came out swinging with a 6-2 win in the opening set at No. 5, but Nikki Milner rallied to answer with wins of 6-1 and 6-3 to earn the game-clinching point for the Panthers.
Jasmine Apawti earned a hard-fought victory in the match of the night at No. 1 singles. The sophomore dropped a narrow 6-4 decision in the opening set, but answered with a 6-4 win in the second to send it to extras. Apawti would outlast Alex Belle in the finale with a 6-3 win.
Milwaukee improves to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in league play with the win, while the Titans fall to 7-8 and 0-3, respectively.
Detroit Mercy will look to rebound quickly as the Titans turn around to take on Green Bay on Sunday. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. from Franklin Athletic Club.
