SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (3/31/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team overpowered Green Bay, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon in Horizon League action from Franklin Athletic Club.
The Titans jumped on the visiting Phoenix from the very beginning, sweeping doubles with wins on all three courts. Detroit Mercy would carry the momentum into singles, where they picked up wins on all six courts – four of which came in straight sets.
Jasmine and
Chelsea Apawti picked up a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles to start the day, before
Sara Mitrakovic and
Ksenia Providokhina clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
Iris Thioux and
Sophie Torcello made it a clean sweep in doubles with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
The Titans extended the momentum in singles, with
Jasmine Apawti taking No. 1 in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2.
Providokhina followed with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 4, as did Mitrakovic with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6.
Pauline Van Herck also picked up a win in straight sets, taking No. 5 with a 6-2 and 6-3 decision.
Thioux rebounded from a loss in the opening set with wins of 6-4 and 6-3 to take the point at No. 2 singles.
Chelsea Apawti cruised to a 6-0 win in the opening set at No. 3 singles, but fell in the second 6-4. The sophomore answered with a 6-3 win in the third to earn the clean sweep for the Titans.
Detroit Mercy improves to 8-8 and 1-3 in the Horizon League with the win, while Green Bay falls to 3-11 and 0-4 in league play.
The Titans return to action next weekend as they hit the road to take on Youngstown State (Apr. 6) and Cleveland State (Apr. 7).
