SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (4/19/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team made it a memorable Good Friday as the Titans rallied for a 4-3, comeback win over Northern Kentucky in Horizon League action from Franklin Athletic Club.
The Titans found themselves in a hole after dropping the doubles point and two of the first three decisions in singles, but rallied to win the final three singles matches and steal the victory away from the Norse.
Senior
Iris Thioux made quick work of Maria Koo at No. 2 singles, taking the point with wins of 6-4 and 6-1. Thioux's win gave the Titans an important point early in singles, as the Norse would go on to win at Nos. 3 and 6 to take a 3-1 lead.
The next two decisions were key as NKU won the opening sets at Nos. 1 and 4, but the Titans were up to the task.
Jasmine Apawti reeled off a pair of 6-4 wins to take the top singles line, while
Ksenia Providokhina battled for wins in the second and third to take No. 4 – leveling the match at 3-3.
The match came down to a grueling, three-set affair at No. 5.
Pauline Van Herck bounced back from a 6-7 loss in the opening set to win 7-5 in the second. Trailing 2-3 in the final frame, Van Herck surged forward and took the win, 6-4.
The comeback win moves the Titans into 6th-place in the Horizon League standings at 3-5, with the tie-breaker over NKU (3-5).
The Titans will look to clinch a Horizon League Tournament berth with a win against Wright State (4-4) on Saturday, in the Titans' regular-season finale and Senior Day from Franklin Athletic Club at 5 p.m.
The Titans will honor the 2018-19 team at approximately 4:40 p.m., prior to the start of the match.
