STREETSBORO, Ohio (4/6/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team picked up a big 4-3 win at Youngstown State on Saturday evening from Western Reserve Racquet Club.
Detroit Mercy closed doubles strong to earn the first point of the match, before clinching the 4-3 win with a split in singles.
Iris Thioux and
Sophie Torcello won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, before
Sara Mitrakovic and
Ksenia Providokhina clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Providokhina picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to give the Titans their first win in singles.
Jasmine Apawti converted the next point for Detroit Mercy, taking the win at No. 1 with scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
Chelsea Apawti clinched the win for the Titans with a grueling win at No. 3. Apawti picked up a 6-3 win in the opening set, before falling 3-6 in the second. She emerged victorious with a 6-4 win in the final frame.
The Titans improve to 9-8 overall and 2-3 in Horizon League play with the win, while the Penguins fall to 4-15 and 1-3, respectively.
Detroit Mercy returns to action on Sunday at Cleveland State. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
