CLEVELAND (4/7/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 match on the road against Horizon League foe Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon.
The Vikings entered the match undefeated in league play at 4-0 and proved to be a tough match. Cleveland State struck first with a win at No. 2 doubles, but the Apawti sisters answered with a 6-4 win at No. 1. The Vikings would earn a tough 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 3 to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
Jasmine Apawti was dominant in singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 1 court.
Pauline Van Herck earned a come-from-behind victory in extra sets after dropping the opener 1-6. The senior responded with 6-3 wins in the second and third sets to seal the win at No. 5.
Ksenia Providokhina jumped out to an early lead with a 6-4 win in the opening set at No. 4 singles, but would fall in three frames as Slan Payne rallied to take the point for the Vikings.
Cleveland State improves to 12-7 overall and 5-0 in league play with the win, while Detroit Mercy falls to 9-9 on the season and 2-4 in conference action.
The Titans return to Michigan for the remainder of the schedule, with a road matchup against Oakland on Apr. 13 and home dates against NKU (Apr. 19) and Wright State (Apr. 20).
