DETROIT (7/15/2019) – From July 10-23, DetroitTitans.com will release the Top 10 Moments of 2018-19 as voted on by members of the Detroit Mercy athletic staff. Each day, a new moment will be posted on DetroitTitans.com as well as on each of the Titan social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).
Coming in at No. 7 in our Top 10 Moments of 2018-19 was junior fencer
Wiley Dressell, the son of Titan head coach
Todd Dressell, qualifying for the 2019 NCAA Fencing National Championships, which were held in Cleveland, Ohio on March 21-24. Dressell competed among the top 24 men's sabruers in the country at the national finals, earning one bout victory for the Titans.
It was Dressell's first appearance at the national finals and the first for a Detroit Mercy fencer since his teammate,
Algird Szumlas, represented the red, white and blue at the 2017 NCAA Championships. Dressell, who finished with a regular-season record of 66-19, was also the first Titan sabreur to reach the national championship since Jaroslaw Jelinek in 2007.
Dressell was named the team's MVP at the year-end banquet and finished eighth out of 11 fencers at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship after placing sixth individually at the Midwest Fencing Conference (MFC) championships in sabre, which also earned him Second Team All-Conference accolades.
Stay tuned for the rest of our #TitanTop10 as we unveil the rest of the list in the coming days.
