DETROIT (7/11/2019) – From July 10-23, DetroitTitans.com will release the Top 10 Moments of 2018-19 as voted on by members of the Detroit Mercy athletic staff. Each day, a new moment will be posted on DetroitTitans.com as well as on each of the Titan social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).
In a season filled with thrilling highlights, softball senior shortstop
Courtney Gilbert provided one of them when she blasted a walk-off home run against rival Oakland on March 27 at home. It's the No. 9 moment of the year in our Top 10 Moments of 2018-19.
After improving to 4-0 in league play with an 8-0 victory over Oakland at home the day prior, Detroit Mercy dropped the second game of the series in extra innings setting up a rubber game between the two rivals.
In the second extra-inning game of the day, the two squads were tied 3-3 after seven innings and played a scoreless eighth inning as well. Junior hurler
Liz Murphy fired her third scoreless frame in the top half of the ninth inning to give Detroit Mercy a chance to win the contest in the bottom of the ninth.
With one out and a 2-2 count, Gilbert lofted her third homer of the season, clinching the series win for the Titans. Gilbert rounded the bases and was mobbed by her teammates at home plate from Buysse Ballpark.
It was also the third series victory in the past four seasons over Oakland under head coach John Conway for the Titan softball team.
Gilbert finished the season as one of the leaders on the Titans team and led the squad in home runs (eight), runs batted in (33) and walks (20), also tying for the team lead in doubles (14) and runs (36).
