DETROIT (1/12/2020) -- Sophomore foilist
Manal Shaito led the University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing squad at the 2020 Detroit Mercy Fencing Invitational on Sunday from Calihan Hall, finishing the day with a mark of 10-5 for the red, white and blue.
Shaito, who led the Titans as a freshman with 62 bout victories in foil, tallied 10 in the first meet of 2020 to lead the squad. Shaito had multiple victories against Cleveland State, Lawrence, Michigan and Michigan State.
As a squad, Detroit Mercy finished 1-6 on the day with a victory over Oakland. The Titans fell to Ohio State (5-20), Cleveland State (7-20), Wayne State (5-22), Lawrence (8-18), Michigan (8-19) and Michigan State (10-16). Eight schools were in action in total from Calihan Hall on Sunday, including five varsity programs.
The Titan women's sabre squad picked up 17 bout victories on the day. Sophomore
Justine Hickey had six bout wins and finished 6-7 on the day. Seniors
Savannah Lee and
Erica Tessmer each earned five bout triumphs on Sunday, while newcomer
Savannah Sloan earned her first bout victory against Cleveland State for the Titans.
Along with Shaito's strong day, senior foilist
Danielle Spencer earned four victories for the red, white and blue, picking up victories against four different teams.

The Titans are back in action next weekend in a pair of duals, heading to New York for the Army Duals in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday, Jan. 18, before heading to the Vassar Duals on Sunday, Jan. 19 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
