DETROIT (1/21/2020) -- Five University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing student-athletes picked up 10 or more victories over the weekend with the Titans fencing on Saturday at the Army Duals and Sunday at the Vassar Duals in New York.
The Titans finished 2-5 overall as a team on Saturday at West Point and 0-2 on Sunday at Vassar. Detroit Mercy picked up victories over Hunter (19-3) and CCNY (17-7), while falling to Navy (8-19), Army (7-20), Royal Military College of Canada (11-16), Stevens (7-20), Cleveland State (7-19) and Drew (7-20). On Sunday, the Titans dropped a pair of duals with Vassar.
Sophomore foilist
Manal Shaito nearly went unbeaten Saturday, tallying a 17-1 mark and finished the weekend with a 19-5 record overall to lead the Titans in victories. Also in foil, senior
Danielle Spencer finished with 10 bout wins for the red, white and blue.
Three members of women's sabre earned 10 or more victories over the weekend with senior
Savannah Lee leading the way with a 12-7 record. Sophomore
Justine Hickey was 11-10 for the Titans, while senior
Erica Tessmer added 10 more bout wins as the sabre group combined for 33Â victories over the weekend -- 24 on Saturday alone.
The sabre team earned wins over Vassar, Hunter, CCNY and RMCC and narrowly fell to Navy (4-5), Cleveland State (4-5) and Vassar again (4-5). The Titan women's foil team defeated Hunter, CCNY and RMCC and was edged by Drew (4-5), Navy (4-5), Stevens (4-5) and CSU (3-5).
In epee, newcomers
Sonya Simmons earned six bout wins, including three against Vassar on Sunday, while
Zaria Reid picked up her first two collegiate bout victories for the Titans.
The Titans are back in action next weekend on Saturday, Jan. 25, competing at the DeCicco Duals on the campus of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
