SOUTH BEND (1/25/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing squad competed in day one of the 2020 DeCicco Duals on Saturday from the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The Titans fenced against six other fencing programs, picking up a team victory over Florida, 16-10. The Titans went head-to-head against two Top-10 teams in the country.
The Titan women's foil and sabre teams both earned 16 bout victories on the day with sophomores
Manal Shaito (10 wins) and
Justine Hickey (seven bout victories) leading their respective weapons, respectively. Shaito went 10-6 in foil, going 3-0 against both Denison and Lawrence. Senior
Danielle Spencer notched six victories on Saturday, going 2-0 against Florida and earning two more bout triumphs over fencers from Denison. She also had single wins over Cleveland State and Lawrence.
Hickey, who went 7-9, had a 3-0 mark against Florida as the Titan sabre squad picked up an 8-1 win over Florida to help punctuate the team victory. Hickey had two bout wins against Denison and added single wins against both Northwestern and Cleveland State. Senior
Savannah Lee was just behind Hickey with six wins on Saturday, also going 3-0 against Florida and earning two more victories against Denison and another against Northwestern. SeniorÂ
Savannah Sloan had three bout wins in sabre.
In epee, freshmanÂ
Zaria Reid had a strong day, picking up five bout wins, tallying at least one against four different schools. Freshman
Sonya Simmons also earned a win in epee for the Titans.
As a team, Detroit Mercy earned a 16-10 win over Florida. The Titans fell to No. 1 Notre Dame (0-27), Cleveland State (9-17), Denison (11-16), Lawrence (9-18) and No. 9Â Northwestern (3-24).

Detroit Mercy returns to dual competition next weekend, heading to the Northwestern Mega-Meet from Evanston, Ill., held on Saturday, Feb. 1 and wrapping up on Sunday, Feb. 2. The Titans then fence in Detroit the following weekend, competing at the Wayne State Duals in midtown Detroit on the campus of WSU.
