#TitanTuesday: Women's Track & Field's Micah Carey

DETROIT (12/15/2020) -- University of Detroit Mercy women's trackster Micah Carey (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Regina) has experienced a lifetime of events and she is only a sophomore.

Carey had a great debut for the Titans last year during the indoor season, but her outdoor campaign never started with the pandemic and she is still wondering about her second collegiate season. She was selected as the Rookie of the Year by the team. She made a major impact for the Titans in the jumps, scoring at the indoor league meet in the triple jump at 11.23 meters, sixth in school history despite never competing in the event before. She also tallied a 5.62m mark in the long jump for fifth in the Titan record book.

DetroitTitans.com caught up with the jumper and hurdler, who hails from Sterling Heights, Michigan.

How Have You Dealt With The Pandemic?
MC: It has been rough. My indoor season as a freshman went really well and I was excited about outdoors, but then that got cancelled. I was at home and I had to do a lot on my own and that was difficult. Coming back to campus we were able to do some training, but now we are back at home. You have to deal with everything, school and staying in shape and staying motivated because you don't know if we will have a season, how is the season going to go, so just a lot of things have been on my mind.

A Year Ago You Were Just Starting Your First Track Meet, You Remember What You Were Thinking?
MC: I remember being really excited, excited to be a part of the team and looking to make an impact. I was interested to see how the training, weight lifting and training at the college level would make me a better athlete and help me in my events. I was just honestly hopeful and excited to help the team and that was my mindset at the time.

What Is The Biggest Difference Between High School & College?
MC: The training. My form, my technique, and my knowledge of events has greatly increased. My coaches have definitely made me stronger in those areas. I didn't really weight train in high school so that is a big difference to get used to and just learning more technical things, body placement and getting better in all of my events.

At A Track Meet, How Much Are You Watching Your Teammates Or Are You Just Focused On Your Events?
MC: Pretty much I like to see the whole meet. I mean, if there is something going on and my teammates are competing and I am not warming up or I am done for the day, I definitely try to watch when I can and cheer them on, be as supportive as I can. The sport is individual, but you're still a part of a team and it is a team effort.

How Important Is It To Be Close With Your Teammates?
MC: It is very important. Track is a different grind. There are days where you might not feel like doing a certain workout, but as a team, we are there for each other and they help you get through it. My teammates have definitely helped me get through hard workouts and get through the grind.

What Are Some Of The Things You Felt You Needed To Work On After Your Freshman Year?
MC: Time management I think is the biggest thing. Just the adjustment from high school to college and trying to manage practice and studying and being as productive as possible to get everything done in the day. I definitely procrastinate way too much. That was the biggest thing I feel and just continuing to improve in my events.

Why Did You Choose Detroit Mercy?
MC: My mom went to the University and she majored in health service administration. I really wanted to run track and coach Ruff and coach Murray, I felt were really good coaches and they made me feel welcomed. The education is amazing so those were just some of the reasons.

What Are You Looking To Pursue After College?
MC: I want to apply to medical school and be a pediatrician or an OBGYN. Going through this pandemic has definitely motivated me more to be in the health field. I like to help people, I enjoy helping people and you will always have a job in this field and helping people at the same time.

What Are Your Favorite Events?
MC: Either long jump or triple jump. Those are the events I am the best in, but I really enjoy them and they get my adrenaline going. I just have a passion for them and helping contribute to the team in those events.
