DETROIT (2/10/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Wayne State University Duals on Saturday from the Mort Horris Recreation and Fitness Center on the campus of Wayne State in midtown Detroit. It was the final dual meets of the 2019-20 regular season for the Titan squads.
Men's Results
Sophomore sabreurÂ
Jaydon Alojipan earned a team-best record of 8-4, with senior
James Baker adding four wins in the weapon as the Titans tallied a team-best 12 victories in sabre. Alojipan earned wins against all four teams Saturday, including one against nationally-ranked Ohio State.
Detroit Mercy earned 10 victories in epee with senior
Christopher Morrison picking up six bout triumphs. Sophomore
Bryce Sturgis and
Peter Swanney both tallied two wins for the red, white and blue. Morrison went 3-0 against Michigan and picked up a win over nationally-ranked Ohio State.
Foilist
Kurt Romkema earned one victory for the foil squad for the Titans.
The Titan men's fencing team finished 0-4, going head-to-head with two varsity teams and falling to No. 3-ranked Ohio State (25-2) and Wayne State (21-6). The Titans also fell to Michigan (18-9) and Michigan State (18-9).
Women's Results
The women's foil team tallied 12 bout wins across three head-to-head duals and the sabre squad added another 11 victories on Saturday for the Titans. The foil squad went 8-1 against Michigan State.
Sophomore foilist
Manal Shaito went 6-3 in foil for the Titans, while senior
Danielle Spencer added four bout wins and sophomore
Justine Hickey added two victories in foil. Hickey also fenced in sabre and added another win for the red, white and blue.
Senior
Savannah Lee was 6-2 to lead the women's sabre team and senior
Erica Tessmer had four bout victories for the Titans, while in epee, newcomer
Zaria Reid had one win against all three teams, finishing with three bout wins on the afternoon.
The Detroit Mercy women's squad dropped three head-to-heads, narrowly falling to Michigan State (14-13) and dropping duals with Wayne State (19-8) and Michigan (19-8).

Detroit Mercy heads to the 2020 Midwest Fencing Conference (MFC) Championships from Feb. 22-23 on the campus of Ohio State University. The Titans also host the 2020 NCAA Midwest Regional Championship just two weeks after that on Saturday, March 7 from Calihan Hall, featuring the best fencers across the Midwest.
