DETROIT (5/6/2020) -- The University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics is unveiling its All-Decade Teams of the 2010s, compiling the best student-athletes across the past 10 seasons (2010-19) into a First and Second Team in each intercollegiate sport. Next up is Titan men's indoor track and field, which had several individual standouts during the decade across the 17 indoor events.
The Titans captured 10 Horizon League championships during the decade and finished runner-up in 2011, while also placing in the top-four of the team standings at the Horizon League Championship in four different seasons (2010, 2011, 2013, 2018). The red, white and blue scored over 50 points at the indoor league championship in five seasons.
Detroit Mercy had a decade-high 97 points in 2011 to place second to Milwaukee (126.5 points). It was the Titans best finish since finishing runner-up in 2001. The Titans won five Horizon League titles that season with Lesley Hanna winning both the 200-meter (21.47) and 400-meter (Horizon League-record 46.92). Vushaun Landrum captured the 60-meter dash (6.85) and the Titans won both the 4x400-meter relay (3:15.58) and Distance Medley Relay (DMR) in a decade-low time of 9:57.48 (second-best in Horizon League history).
Hanna won three Horizon League championships as an individual during his career (one of them coming in 2009 in the 400-meter). His record of 46.92 in 2011 remains the Horizon League record. Earnest Cleary won a Horizon League title in the 60-meter dash in 2010.
Both
Ben Kendell and Eric Lewis captured multiple indoor HL titles during the decade with Kendell winning back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018 in the 3,000-meter run. Lewis was a league champion in the weight throw in both 2012 and 2013. Lewis continued a long line of success in throwing events as the Titans have earned eight weight throw titles since 1998.
Kendell was named a Third Team Academic All-American in 2017 for his combined performances in cross country and track and field. He was also three-time Academic All-District (2017-19). Three Titans also were honored with the President's Award honor during the decade -- Pat Liederbach (2011), Aviram Campbell (2012) and Kendell (2019).
All-League honors, award winners, standout and record-breaking performances, academic achievements and accolades as well as submissions from fans were all considered for each of the Detroit Mercy All-Decade Teams of the 2010s.
