SAGINAW, Mich. (6/21/2021) -- University of Detroit Mercy women's golf incoming freshman Ariel Chang made a run at the title at the 105th Michigan Women's Amateur Championship.

The tournament was held at the Par 71, Saginaw Country Club.

Chang started the event finishing second in stroke play with a 2-over 144 (70-74), just one shot shy of medalist honors. In round one, she was the leader firing a 1-under 70 with two birdies and 15 pars and came back in round two with a 74 adding two more birdies.

She was then seeded second in match play and cruised in her first two matches defeating Jessica Jolly, 5 & 4, by taking six of the final 10 holes. In the round of 16, she downed Shannon Kennedy, 4 & 3, winning five of the last eight holes.

In the round of eight, she battled Natalie Samdal and was able to eliminate her, 3 & 2, to move into the final four. In that match, Kimberly Dinh took the early lead, but Chang was able to pull within two winning holes 15 and 16. On 17 though, she was not able to complete the comeback falling 3 & 1.

Other Titans competing in the event were seniors Alexa Hatz and Kendall Payne and sophomore Shae Zydeck. Payne tied for 14th overall in stroke play with a 154 (76-78) and was seeded 16th in match play, dropping her match in the first round to Chaithra Katamneni, 3 & 2.
