Men's & Women's Track, Lanfear Earn USTFCCCA Academic Laurels

NEW ORLEANS (7/18/2022) -- On the strength of his outstanding outdoor season and his work in the classroom, University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field senior Daniel Lanfear earned All-Academic status and both the men's and women's teams were tabbed All-Academic programs by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

For Lanfear, he earns the honor after competing in the high jump at the 2022 NCAA East Region Preliminary round, where he placed 43rd. The three-time Horizon League All-Academic recipient holds a 3.87 GPA in Computer Science and was third in the high jump at the Horizon League Championships.

For Division I Track & Field All-Academic athletes, they must have:
  • Minimum CUMULATIVE grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, certifiable by either NCAA Faculty Rep or NCAA Compliance Coordinator or Registrar's Office. Institutions utilizing a different GPA scale must convert the GPA to a 4.0 scale using the standard conversion method [GPA/Scale x 4.0].
  • Must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships (the Preliminary Championship Competition and/or the Final Championship Competition) or for the multi-events, must have finished the season ranked in the top 48 in the East or top 48 in the West for the most recent outdoor season, certifiable by their place on the NCAA Division I

Lanfear is just the fifth male Titan to receive the academic distinction and the first since Ben Kendall '19 in 2019.

The women's team has now received the team honor in all 20 years of the award's existence, while the men have been honored 19 times, missing only 2003.

The women's team posted a 3.41 team GPA, the third highest in the Horizon League as well as among the Division I teams in the state of Michigan. The men recorded a 3.34, 48th in the nation, the second highest in the Horizon League as well as third among the Division I teams in the state of Michigan.

More than 150 teams were honored by the USTFCCCA, which met the following criteria:
  • The cumulative GPA (not 2021-22 academic year, not semester) for all student-athletes on the institution's NCAA Squad List for Indoor and/or Outdoor Track and Field must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, certifiable by either NCAA Faculty Rep or NCAA Compliance Coordinator or Registrar's Office. Institutions utilizing a different GPA scale must convert the GPA to a 4.0 scale using the standard conversion method [GPA/Scale x 4.0].
  • The cumulative GPA of all student-athletes on the institution's NCAA Squad List for Indoor and/or Outdoor Track and Field must be computed by the following method:
  • Total the cumulative number of semester hours or quarter hours earned for all student-athletes on the NCAA Squad List, including the most recent grading period;
  • Total the cumulative number of quality points (GPA multiplied by the number of credit hours) earned by all student-athletes on the NCAA Squad List, including the most recent grading period
