HENDERSON, Nev. (3/11/2023) -- University of Detroit Mercy senior
Sydney Bradford posted her first-ever top-10 finish as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team ended the spring opener in the Winona State Warrior Invitational on Saturday.
As a team, the Titans were fourth with a 1,009 (325-326-348) at the par 72, 6,002-yard Legacy Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada.
Bradford was ninth overall with a 246 (81-81-84), just two shots short of her career best. She had 10 pars in her final round and led the team with 26 in the tournament, tied for seventh most among the competition. She was also tied for fifth on the par 3 (+4, 3.33) and seventh on the par 4 (+15, 4.50) scoring averages.
Freshman
Taylor Kondel registered a top-20 finish placing 20th overall with a 256 (87-84-85). Her final 18 saw her tally five pars and a birdie. She had 22 pars in the event and was tied for eighth in the field with a +5, 3.42 average on the par 3's.
Junior
Sophia Ubaydi was 24th with a 264 (90-88-86), while freshman
Kyla Charlebois took 25th with a 266 (89-92-85)
The event did end with some controversy as sophomore
Ariel Chang was tied for first with two holes remaining but was then disqualified for not playing with "conforming clubs" as she had stickers on her driver face and a staff member from an opposing school brought it to the attention of the tournament staff. She came into the round in second place with a 150 (77-73), just three shots off the top spot, and took the lead after 10 holes and was tied for first after birding 16 before the ruling was made.
The Titans will now get ready for Cleveland State's Nevel Meade Collegiate, which is scheduled for Mar. 20-21.
