DETROIT (9/24/2023) -- University of Detroit Mercy women's golf junior
Ariel Chang tallied two birdies in the last four holes, and she needed every low score to earn her first collegiate win at Youngstown State's Roseann Schwartz Invitational on Sunday.
Chang posted a 1-under 71 in the final round to tie for first with a career-tying 144 (73-71). The tiebreaker was the lowest second-round score, giving her the win over Bucknell's Sofia Nogalo (70-74).
Chang was tied for fourth heading into the round and after a bogey to start the day, she finished the front nine with three birdies and four pars. On the back nine, she parred 10, 12, 13 and 14 before knocking in a birdie on 15. She parred the next two holes and went out in style, recording a birdie on 18 for the low round and the win.
She was tied for second overall with eight birdies and tied for seventh with 21 pars, while leading the competition on the par 3's with a -2, 2.75 scoring average and a -6, 4.25 average on the par 5's.
It was the first win by a Titan since
Alexa Hatz '22 won the Mastodon Spring Invite in 2019. It was also her 11th career top-10 finish and seventh career top-five effort.
Sophomore
Sydnie Redovich tied for 11th with a career-best 152 (75-77), which included a career-low 75 in round one. She had 11 pars and a birdie in round one and had nine pars with a pair of birdies in round two. She led the team and was fifth overall with 22 pars.
Sophomore
Taylor Kondel posted a career-best 159 (79-80) for a share of 27th, while freshman
Zell Wilson ended with a 164 (80-84) for 36th. Wilson also had one of the nine eagles in the event as she was able to get her third shot on the par 5 ninth hole to roll in.
As a team, the Titans placed fifth with a 619 (307-312) at the par 72, 6,088-yard Mill Creek Golf North Course in Boardman, Ohio. The 619 is tied for the 13th best 36-hole score in school history.
Detroit Mercy will return to action in Eastern Michigan's tournament on Oct. 2-3.
