Mullins Earns Fourth, Lipscomb Registers Top 10 School Mark On Opening Day Of Can-Am Classic

Freshman Lyla Mullins claimed a top-five finish in the shot put.

WINDSOR, Ont. (1/10/2025) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field team returned from the holiday break on Friday. The Titans made the short trip across the Detroit River to Windsor University to compete in day one of the 42nd Annual Can-Am Classic.

Detroit Mercy was led by a pair of top-eight finishes in the shot put. Freshman Lyla Mullins claimed fourth place with a personal best toss of 11.97 meters, while sophomore Grace Steffes was sixth with a mark of 11.69m.

In the triple jump event, freshman Julia Young leaped to a personal best 10.27 meters taking 16th, while Graduate student Zoe Madden was 19th with a jump of 10.04m.

On the track, the Titans were led by freshman Haley Lipscomb, who recorded a time of 9.44 seconds to finish in 16th place in the 60-meter hurdles, ninth in the record book. Sophomore Gabriela Gashaj was 25th in 10.09, while freshman Zainab Ali claimed 29th place in 10.72.

The 4x200-meter relay team of Madden, Gashaj, Lipscomb, and Ali closed the night for the Titans with a 10th place finish and a time of 1:52.59.

Detroit Mercy will return to Windsor tomorrow morning to conclude the Can-Am Classic. The competition is set to resume at 8:30 a.m.
