Paige Keown hit 1-for-3, connecting on a three-run homer along with a sacrifice fly to post four RBI while freshman
Abby Klaft went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple and a pair of runs scored as Detroit Mercy dropped a hard fought 8-6 decision to Western Illinois followed by a 13-5 setback to Butler on the second day of action at the DePaul Rosemont Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman
Natalie Babcock went 1-for- 3 with a RBI double and two runs scored. Junior
Trinity Fessler was also one of three doubles for the Detroit Mercy (0-3) while junior
Elyssa Adams accounted for one of the Titans' six total hits.
Freshman
Erin Flynn made her first career start in the circle, going 4.2 innings with two strikeouts in the no-decision effort.
Sophomore
Jada Davis led the way in the nightcap, going 2-for-2 with three RBI off a two-run double and RBI triple. Freshman
Allison Fluker added an RBI single, while freshman
Wendy Ketola added an RBI groundout.
Western Illinois Recap:
• Klaft opened the game with an RBI triple to score Babcock followed by a sac fly from Keown to plate Klaft giving the Titans a 2-0 lead.
• After WIU (1-0) scored off an RBI single in the second inning, Keown hit her first career home run with a three-run shot to score Klaft and Babcock in the third for a 5-1 advantage.
• The Leathernecks added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth off an RBI triple, tying the game at 5-5.
• UDM walks and a defensive miscue in the seventh inning proved to be costly as WIU scored a run off a muffed throw followed by two bases-loaded walks and a fielder's choice totaling four runs (two unearned) to move ahead 8-5.
• Babcock hit a ground-rule RBI double to score Fessler but that would be as close as the Titans would get
Butler Recap:
• UDM jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning off Davis' RBI double and Fluker's RBI single.
• Butler added two runs in the bottom half to inch closer at 3-2
• After the Bulldogs added five runs to move ahead 7-3 in the third inning, the Titans added two more runs in the top of the fourth to trail 7-5 off Davis' triple and Ketola's ground out.
• Butler once again responded in the bottom half with four more runs and added two more in the fifth to win the game.
Detroit Mercy closes the Rosemont Tournament on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 9, against St. Thomas at 10 a.m. ET followed by Valparaiso at 3 p.m. ET.
