BATH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (7/2/2026) -- Three current University of Detroit Mercy men's golfers advanced to match play at the 115th Annual Michigan Amateur Championship.
The event is being held at Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath Township, Mich.
Senior
Mason Sokolowski, sophomore
Spencer Shearer, and incoming freshman Christian Helzer were all in the field, along with former Titan
Matt Zerbel. All four claimed top 64 spots in stroke play to advance to match play.
Sokolowski tied for 27th in stroke play, tallying a 145. He started with a 2-over 73 and then had a 1-over 72 before moving into match play, where he won his first match in 19 holes before falling in the round of 32.
Helzer posted a 147 and tied for 36th. He began the event with a 2-under 69 before he had a 78 and then won his opening-round match in 19 before dropping his next match.
Shearer shared 41st with a 148 as he shot an even-par 71 and then a 77. In the round of 64, he would also oust his counterpart in 19 before falling in the next round.
Zerbel - who played at UDM from 2013-15 - shared 22nd with a 144, firing a 1-under 70 followed by a 4-over 74, but he dropped his first bout in match play.
Over the years, UDM has seen quite a few student-athletes compete in the historic event and advance to match play. The three current Titans who competed were the most since UDM had four in the field in 2015 in
Kyle Gaines '17,
Aaron Knutson '16,
David Thompson '17, and Zerbel.
Gaines advanced to the round of 16 in 2014, while the Golden Era of Titan golf saw Titan and Michigan Golf Hall Of Famer's
Bob Babbish and
Sam Kocsis capture the titles in 1935 and 1941, respectively.
