The Detroit Titans men's tennis team wrapped up its Fall Invitational by taking three singles and a doubles flight. The weekend event was held at Mercy High School in Farmington Hills.
"Overall, I am happy with the way we played all weekend," said head coach Grant Asher. "We have things we need to work on starting with conditioning. We lost some matches that I thought we could have won due to conditioning, but to have the team play and go out there competing for every point was a great way to start the program."
The Titans took the top three singles flights led by junior Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) who claimed No. 1 taking both of his matches 6-3, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2. For the weekend, Necajevs was a perfect 4-0 in singles play and did not drop a set in the process.
"It was good for us as a new team and a new program to play hard," said Necajevs. "We are a young team, but we are very positive and ambitious and our coaches did a great job getting us ready to play."
Freshman Dustin Goldenberg (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) was also impressive all weekend long in the No. 3 hole as the rookie took home top honors winning all four of his singles in the two-day tournament, including both of his matches on Sunday 6-4, 6-2.
"It feels great to go 4-0 in my first collegiate event," said Goldenberg. "Coming into the weekend, I felt that I could go undefeated as long as I put my mind into it and worked hard."
Junior Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) was the top finisher in the No. 2 flight. Troy split a pair of matches on the day taking his first 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 before falling 6-2, 6-4 in the last match of the day. Troy also teamed with freshman Nick Tolomei (Rochester Hills, MI/Adams) at No. 3 doubles to go a perfect 3-0 on the weekend. The duo took the flight with an 8-3 victory in the morning.
Detroit returns to action on Friday, Sept. 26, as the Titans travel to Valparaiso, IN, to play in the Valpo Fall Invitational.
