The UDM men's tennis team dropped just two matches on the day as the Titans rolled past in-state rival Wayne State, 6-1, on Sunday at the Franklin Athletic Center.
“We followed a quality win on Friday over Chicago State with another win against a good Wayne State team,” said head coach
Grant Asher. “I was a little disappointed with our doubles play, but we got it together in singles and had some great wins, especially from
Gino McCathney and
Nick Tolomei at our five and six positions.”
Detroit started the day by taking two out of three in doubles led by the Titan top duo of junior
Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) and freshman
Dustin Goldenberg (Bloomfield Hills, MI/West Bloomfield), who won easily 8-2. UDM would go on to earn the point in the doubles round with a 9-7 victory by as freshmen
Gino McCathney (Livonia, MI/Stevenson) and
David Stabley (Utica, MI/Eisenhower) at the No. 2 slot.
The red, white and blue then dominated singles play winning five of six matches, dropping only two sets in the process. Necajevs started the Titan parade by taking his match at No 1, 6-3, 6-4. Goldenberg won his bout at No. 2, 7-6 (6), 7-5, while junior
Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) secured a 7-6 (4), 6-0 victory at the No. 3 position.
Freshman
Nick Tolomei (Rochester, MI/Adams) garnered a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-4 win at No. 5, while McCathney came up with his first dual win of the season, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 6 hole.
Detroit will have one last weekend of non-conference play before the full Horizon League slate gets underway as the Titans make their way to Fort Wayne, IN, for matches against IPFW and St. Francis (PA).
