The Detroit Titans men's tennis team opened their two-game road swing with a 5-0 set back at No. 11 Illinois Friday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis Center.
With the loss, Detroit falls to .500 on the season at 5-5 while Illinois improves to 8-3.
In the doubles competition, the No. 1 tandem of junior Pjotrs Necajevs(Riga, Latvia / Herdera Vidusskola -Mississippi State) and freshman Dustin Goldenberg (Bloomfield Hills, MI / West Bloomfield) were in a close match with Illinois' Billy Heiser and Meedo El Tabakh at 6-4. However, the match was left unfinished as the Fighting Illini claimed victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to take the doubles point.
Detroit hung tough in singles play at the No. 1 and No. 6 position. Necajevs dropped the first set, 6-4, but only trailed 2-1 one in the second to Ruan Roelofse while freshman Gino McCathney (Livonia, MI/Stevenson) battled Waylon Chin, 6-4, 5-4,. Similar to doubles, the Titans did not get a chance to mount a come back as both matches were left unfinished due to Illinois locking up the match with convincing wins the No. 2, 3 and 5 slots.
The Titans will travel to Bowling Green, KY and look to rebound in a non-conference match against Western Kentucky on Sun., Mar. 1 at 9 a.m.
