Men’s Tennis Downed By Ball State

Box Score

The UDM men's tennis team was back on the court for the first time in two weeks, since the Titans defeated Horizon League foe Youngstown State, but despite a tough battle, Detroit suffered a 7-0 setback to Ball State in Muncie on Sunday.

“We fought for every point out there and never gave up,” said head coach Grant Asher. “We created a lot of opportunities out there, and now, we just need to keep improving and capitalize on them.”

After dropping all three doubles matches, the Titans came out with some hard effort and tough breaks in singles play. At the No. 1 slot, junior Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) went toe-to-toe with the Cardinals' best player in two-time first team All-MAC netter Jose Perdomo, falling 7-5 (5), 5-7, 10-4.

Freshman Dustin Goldenberg (Bloomfield Hills, MI/West Bloomfield) and junior Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) also had their chances in singles play as Goldenberg took his first set to an extra score before finally falling 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2, while Troy was even through the first half of his match before being upended 6-4, 6-3.

Detroit returns home where the red, white and blue will host Chicago State on Friday in a doubleheader with the Titan women starting at 8:00 p.m. at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
