Detroit Drops Sunday Matinee At Cleveland State

Box Score

Despite a win at No. 1 singles by junior Pjotrs Necajevs, the UDM men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss at Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon.

Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) pushed his winning streak to seven straight as the top Titan netter earned a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-4 victory over CSU's Phil Orno, the 2008 Horizon League Player of the Year who went undefeated in conference play a season ago.

The Titans (5-9, 1-4 HL) saw two other singles matches nearly fall in their favor as freshman Dustin Goldenberg (Bloomfield Hills, MI/West Bloomfield) dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match at the No. 2 position, while junior Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) was upended 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot.

In doubles, Detroit fought hard in all three matches, losing 8-6 and 8-5 at No. 1 and 3 respectively, while nearly getting the victory at No. 2 forcing a tiebreaker that the red, white and blue eventually dropped 8-7 (1).

UDM will now have one more day of competition before the Horizon League Championship as the Titans head to Valparaiso, IN, on Friday, April 10, for a conference doubleheader against Valpo and Green Bay.
