Titans Close Out Regular Season With A Pair Of Road Setbacks

The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team ended its comeback season with on Friday as the Titans fell to both Valparaiso and Green Bay 6-1 at the Matchpoint Tennis Club in Griffith, IN.

Detroit finished its first year of varsity competition since 1995 at 5-11, including a 1-6 record in the Horizon League.

Senior Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) was the lone Titan to win a singles match on the day as the Titan top netter took out Valpo's Alex Lau 6-0, 6-2 and Green Bay's Paul Swanson 6-1, 6-3 at the No 1 position in both matches. With the victories, Necajevs ended the regular season with a 24-4 mark in singles play, which included a perfect 7-0 ledger in the Horizon League. He enters the conference tournament having won nine in a row.

Necajevs also had a hand in another Titan win on the day as he teamed with freshman David Stabley (Utica, MI/Eisenhower) to post a 9-7 tally over the Phoenix tandem of Eric Plaushines and Henning Jess at No 1. Against Valparaiso, Stabley and rookie Dustin Goldenberg (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) went into a tiebreaker before capturing the match at No. 2 doubles 9-8 (3)  over Kevin DeHerrera and Kyle Stump.

The Titans will now have two weeks to prepare for its first conference tournament in 14 years. The 2009 men's and women's Horizon League Tennis Championships will take place on April 24-26 at North Central High School in Indianapolis, IN.
