Titans Nearly Come Away With Two Flight Titles

Full Results

It was a battle all weekend long for the Detroit Titans men's tennis team, but UDM persevered through the weather and delays to take two runner-up efforts at the 31st Annual Ball State Invitational.

Senior Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) advanced to the finals in Flight A by defeating Ball State's Cliff Morrison, 6-2, 6-4, but fell to Horizon League rival Phil Orno of Cleveland State in the title match. The meeting was a battle of the two best netters in the conference as Orno was the HL Player of the Year in 2008, while Necajevs earned the honor last year downing the Viking, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-4, during the regular season.

“Phil is an excellent player and he got the best of Pete today,” said head coach Grant Asher. “They are now 1-1 against each other so it should make for a great match when they see each other again.”

Meanwhile in Flight D doubles, sophomore David Stabley (Utica, MI/Eisenhower) and Nick Tolomei (Rochester, MI/Adams) came into the championship match after a pair of impressive wins on Saturday, but despite playing hard the Titan tandem fell to Xavier's Brennan Rooney and Brandon MacDonald, 8-2.

The Titans will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 7, with the hosting of the Detroit-Wayne State Challenge on the Titan Tennis Complex. The match will be the first-ever collegiate tennis match on the new courts.
