Detroit's women's tennis team opened up its 2010 campaign on Sunday evening and fell to Eastern Michigan, 6-1, at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, MI.

In her first dual match in a Titan uniform, sophomore Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) defeated EMU sophomore Karina Ahuja (6-4, 6-4) at the No. 4 spot in singles competition, while redshirt freshman Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision at #6 singles.

“We fought hard today, but just came up short,” said Detroit head coach Sam Poole. “We need to improve on being mentally tough and keeping our game together longer; to be more consistent.”

In doubles competition, Detroit freshman Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) and Cornwell were paired up at the #2 slot and defeated EMU's Karina Ahuja and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr, 8-4. However, the Eagles won the doubles point with their #1 and #3 pairs capturing each of their matches over the Titans.

Detroit will return to action when the Titans travel to Kalamazoo, MI, to face Western Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m.
