Men’s Tennis Surges Past IPFW, 5-2

Box Score

Senior Patrick Troy's (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) victory at No. 2 singles sealed the first win of the year for the Titans as Detroit downed IPFW, 5-2, on Friday night at the Franklin Athletic Club.

“I was pretty happy with the effort and the way we came out tonight,” said head coach Grant Asher. “IPFW is a good and well-coached team. Last year, we were able to get a 4-3 victory against them and I was looking at the same kind of score this year, but to win 5-2 says a lot about where this club is.”

The Titans (1-1) started the night by winning the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. Senior Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) and freshman Chris Cheung (Mississauga, ON/Erindale Secondary) got UDM on the board first with a quick 8-3 win. Troy and sophomore Nick Tolomei (Rochester, MI/Adams) then followed with an 8-5 triumph.

Detroit would go on to win four singles starting with Necajevs dominating at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1. After the Mastodons captured two matches, Tolomei put UDM back on top, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3, decision at No. 5.
With two matches left and Detroit up 3-2, Troy held serve and won at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3, to gain the decisive fourth point. Cheung then ended the night with an epic battle at No. 3, coming from a 4-1 deficit in the third set tiebreaker to win 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (4).

“Pat won a great match for us that turned out to be the winner and Chris really fought back,” said Asher. “Right now, we are just looking to get better as we move on and tonight was a great start for us as we came out right away and took the doubles point.”

The Titans will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday as Detroit travels to Western Michigan for a 6:00 p.m. affair at the West Hills Athletic Club. You can watch the match on live stats through WMU's website by clicking here.
