The Detroit women's tennis team was edged by Cincinnati, 4-3, at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield on Sunday evening.
In doubles competition, Detroit's pair of freshman
Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) and junior
Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) won at the No. 3 slot against UC junior Abby Mayo and freshman Caitlin O'Gara, 8-4.
The Bearcats (2-4) then captured the victory at No. 1, so it all came down to those competing at No. 2. For UDM that was senior
Svetlana Flankova (Riga Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) and freshman
Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7), but they came up short against UC's tandem of sophomore Ksenia Slynko and freshman Elise Woulfe, 9-7.
In singles, Capuano defeated Mayo at No. 6 by scores of 6-1 and 6-0, which marks Capuano's second win at No. 6 thus far this season. Sophomore
Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) also claimed a win in singles for UDM against UC sophomore Safiyya Ismail at No. 3 with scores of 7-6(5), 0-6, 10-8. The No. 2 singles were the last two competing and Espinosa battled Slynko to a 6-0, 7-6 (5) victory to put her season record at 2-2 when playing at No. 2.
The Titans (0-6) will return to action when they face IPFW in Fort Wayne, IN, on Saturday at 7 p.m.
