Women's Tennis Defeats Southeast Missouri State, 6-1

Detroit's women's tennis squad ended its weekend with a 6-1 win over Southeast Missouri State on neutral ground Sunday morning in Ft. Wayne, IN, at the Pine Ridge Raquet & Fitness Center. In addition, the Titans came up short against IPFW, 4-3, at the same location Saturday night.

Against Southeast Missouri, UDM opened up the competition capturing the point at doubles as all three pairs won. It was highlighted by an 8-2 victory for Detroit senior Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) and freshman Carolina Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) at No. 2 as they defeated junior Ashton Hartley and senior Elise Nattier.

In the same match, the Titans won five of the six singles duels, including a shutout from freshman Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) over Southeast Missouri freshman Laura Garcia at No. 6. Espinosa won at No. 2 against junior Alyce Kelly, 6-0, 6-1, while sophomore Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) walked away with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 slot over Nattier. Flankova captured a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 versus Hartley, while sophomore Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) won at No. 5 against freshman Diana Donoslovic (6-0, 6-1).

The only loss in singles came at No. 1 as sophomore Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) had to forfeit to give Redhawks freshman Nikole Novikova a win.

Against IPFW Saturday night, Espinosa won at No. 2 (6-4, 6-2), while Flankova captured a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 spot. Lastly, Capuano won at No. 6 by scores of 6-1 and 6-4. The Mastodons took the doubles point as IPFW won at all three slots.

The Titans were originally scheduled to face Evansville in East Lansing Sunday afternoon, but that match has been postponed an no make-up date has been set as of yet.

Detroit will return to action when the Titans travel to Hamilton, OH, to face Miami at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28.
